2016, It’s a wrap!
Published: December 19, 2016Who can believe another year is drawing to a close? As we begin to celebrate the festive season with family and friends, here at Flooring Xtra we also start getting excited about the trends surfacing for the new year ahead…
2016 saw so many beautiful trends, with a focus on natural textures and tones. This was made more dynamic with the marbles, coppers and hazy-neon tones of Rose Quartz and Serenity (Pantone colours of 2016) which was evident in every interior fitting, fixture and accessory possible. It was hard to miss. So how did this translate to flooring trends in the last 12 months? Of course the coppers and the marbles are not something which fits into the realm of carpets and timber floorings, although the textural woven rugs, low pile carpets and oak flooring which was so dominant in the market sat back beautifully with the trending materials in interior design. The wonderful thing about flooring trends is that they tend to be more long lasting and timeless than that of the hottest colour or accessory. While flooring trends obviously come and go, their longevity is a positive, with new flooring being a bigger investment than that of a cushion or vase in the “it” colour.
Pantone released its colour prediction for the year ahead, announcing that Greenery, would be the colour in abundance for 2017. So who is Pantone? They are a world-recognised body which aims to provide a consistent colour recognition system across the globe- in other words if you design a logo with the colour Greenery in Australia, that colour can be recognised and replicated around the world precisely. They also make predictions each year for what they believe will be the biggest colour for the next 12 months. Designers and manufacturers wait with baited breath for the announcement, knowing that this colour will hit the shops in record speed as soon as it’s released. Greenery symbolises new change and a desire to escape to the natural world, surely a timely selection given the worlds current social and political environment. So, watch as every store from exclusive boutiques through to high street shops transforms their wares into the colour green.
It has also been widely predicted that we will see more of the gorgeous neutral and natural materials which we have enjoyed over the last few years, with a re-emergence of terracotta and cork at the top of the list. We will also see a push from some of the lighter timbers to their darker counterparts, however there will always be a place for beautiful lighter timbers in our minds! If you’re wanting to update your space although are nervous of making the big commitment of paint or fittings, try rugs for a more affordable and less… fixed option. Rugs provide so much to a tired space, from warmth and texture, through to much needed pops of colour and pattern.
There are many products which we are excited about for the year ahead, but have seen some particular trends within our own ranges recently which stand out. It is no surprise that any product which claims to be easy to clean or low maintenance is going to be a winner, particularly when it doesn’t compromise on look or feel.
We predict that the popularity of Aqua Smart, exclusive to Flooring Xtra stores, will continue in 2017. The unique wood polymer composite (WPC) core makes this product 100% waterproof, therefore can be installed anywhere in your home including wet areas. The beautiful board is available in a wide range of contemporary colours which will work in any interior and is ridiculously easy to maintain. This is such a plus for busy home owners today. The same trends follow through to the soft flooring options, with solution dyed nylon carpet still such a popular option.
Our Soul Elements carpet range, with its cosy and nurturing touch as well as being easy to maintain, will provide families with balance and relief during the silly season.
As 2016 rolls to an end, we wish all of our clients and their families a happy festive season. We hope to help you with a project in the new year!
