Complete Transformation – The Townhouse Renovation We Can’t Stop Looking At

By: Michelle, Updated on: June 25, 2025

Gina from the Canberra-based Style Curator has been on our radar for some time now and we are avid readers of her informative and stylish blog. Recently she worked on a project close to home, with her public relations collaborator, Bonnie. Bonnie purchased a townhouse in an excellent location in the inner south of Canberra which Gina described as being “Brown, dated, pokey, dark and featuring a patchwork of finishes.” It doesn’t sound appealing and the images confirm this as truth!

While the home may have been plagued with issues, the house had good bones. Both Gina and Bonnie could see past the negative elements to imagine what could be a gorgeous family home. Gina noted, “The property sat on a great block meaning they could possibly extend down the track and it was close to the local shops.” The main area of the home which required TLC was the kitchen and living room, being a jigsaw of spaces with different materials and no real “flow”. “Bonnie loves to entertain and cook so we opened this whole area up… And banished the brown!”

Along with the kitchen being replaced with something far more functional, the dated materials such as brown carpet were ripped up and replaced with Blackbutt engineered timber flooring. A neutral palette was devised to allow for a modern family home. Whites and greys are punctuated with the warmth of timber notes throughout. “The new flooring made all the difference. It feels bigger and more modern while being easier to maintain with Bonnie’s beloved dog. It’s also set the Scandinavian style for the rest of the home.”

The interior and exterior of the home have been transformed, with landscaping currently underway. The great thing about the home is its potential, with space to extend should they wish to. There’s no rush though, with the main kitchen and living areas beautifully renovated and fresh finishes and details in the bathrooms and bedrooms throughout.

This considered and planned approach to home renovation is Gina’s recommendation. “Very few people have the means to renovate all in one go, to the standard that they really want to. I always say that you can’t do everything at once, it’s better to have a clear overall vision of what you want and create a plan. I see a lot of people compromising on important areas of the home, like the kitchen for example. Work out your priorities.” This is also Gina’s recommendation for the flooring too. “We selected something from the higher price bracket, but you can tell as soon as you see it. It looks good and the quality is high, it’s easy to maintain and it can be restored down the track if there’s any damage. It’s an investment.”

Thanks to Gina and Bonnie for sharing their work, what a beautiful home you have created! Check out the transformation on Style Curator’s blog.

FAQs

Are timber floors high maintenance?

Timber floors sit higher on the maintenance scale in the hard flooring world. But while laminate flooring, vinyl and hybrid flooring might require less maintenance, all flooring requires some level of care to keep it looking like new for longer. The look and feel of real timber is also aspirational, authentic and full of genuine character which can last for years if cared for. It also has the ability to be repaired in many cases, that is why we see beautiful old homes with original (restored, often) flooring.

Where can I find engineered timber flooring in Australia?

Why choose engineered timber oak flooring?

Engineered boards are beautiful to look at as they’re made from layers of real timber. The character, markings and personality of natural timber shine through and add something to the interior design that’s authentic (although there are lots of great timber-look alternatives!). They’re relatively easy to maintain and are quick to install.
