Hallways and entryways are some of the hardest working areas in the home when it comes to flooring. The foot traffic and the way we use this space puts a lot of pressure of the flooring so choosing an appropriate covering will mean they will look better for longer. While the general wear and tear is important, aesthetics will also be at the forefront of your mind if you’re designing a home, renovating or replacing the flooring here. Good news, there’s options to suit both considerations. Flooring that is hard wearing but also looks good? Read on to find out more.

Hard flooring

Hard flooring is a better option for the entry and hallway spaces in some regards. It’s easy to clean and with regular care will be more forgiving to the unique usage of both spaces. If you’re not trying to match the flooring to other connecting areas, hybrid, vinyl and laminate styles, are good options. The timber-look materials are tough, look great and, depending on the product, are often waterproof (helpful for entryways and the hallway spaces adjoining wet areas).

Entryway Carpet

Carpet is cosy and inviting, there’s no doubt about it. Carpet wear however is something that you need to consider in high-traffic spaces like a hallway and entry. While it is only one area of the home, it often connects to many other spaces or rooms meaning matching or complimenting flooring is important for flow and continuity. If you have the luxury of starting from scratch, hard-wearing entryway carpet options include solution dyed nylon carpet, polypropylene and polyester fibres. The full range of carpets can be found here where you can filter by fibre type. Resilient, tough and easy to clean and maintain, synthetic fibres are a great material for a high-traffic spaces. Ensuring there’s a quality underlay for your entryway carpet will also help enormously. Underlay helps to absorb the wear of frequent carpet use and will prolong the life of your carpet investment.

Extra care

Whether you choose hard flooring or carpet, ensuring you take extra care in this area will mean you can enjoy your floors for longer. A rug in the entry or a runner rug in a hallway will provide extra protection from constant foot traffic. It will also catch any of the dirt and grit caught from the outside and brought in. An even better idea is to have a no-shoes policy inside. Provide a space in the entry for people to remove their shoes and storage to encourage it as well. Pets are often fond of running up and down hallways or excitedly bounding in from outside too. Keeping your pets’ paws in check will reduce any damage here (hello long claws!!).
