Store Awards 2017
Winners Are Grinners at The Sanctuary Cove Conference
The Flooring Xtra annual conference is always a great event. Store holders catching up, sharing ideas and educational workshops are enjoyed by all. This year it was held in the beautiful Sanctuary Cove where store holders from across the country enjoyed the stunning surroundings. Of course, there’s the inaugural awards presented as well where the best preforming stores are recognised across each state. We chatted to this year’s winners who were pretty chuffed with their accolades.
The Queensland winner, who also took out the biggest award, Store of the Year was Mitch and Jessica of the Fortitude Valley store, Tatters Flooring Xtra. The relatively new store only opened in November last year, making it an exciting win for the duo. “We were a little bit surprised, but it shows all of our hard work has paid off. We’re still a little overwhelmed!” Said Jessica. Mitch had flooring experience and Jessica brings her Real Estate experience to the table to create a formidable team. They were able to cut their teeth prior to opening the Brisbane showroom by managing an existing store in Townsville for a little while. “It was like our trial run and we found we could hit the ground running when we opened Tatters.” Shifting industries has been an interesting experience for Jessica as she speaks about the most rewarding part of the job. “The interaction with customers has been the most enjoyable.
On the other side of the country, in Willetton WA, owner David was also excited about the win and came home from the conference with new knowledge. “It was a very informative conference, I learnt a lot. It’s also good to network and meet other store holders.” David has not had the store for too long, having purchased it just under two years ago. “I was looking for a business which was already established, having started three others from scratch. I’ve had a landscaping business, roof repair and property maintenance business all before this.” The multi-skilled David was looking for a different sort of challenge, one which he has definitely met head-on in a such a short space of time.
South Australian winners were South Adelaide’s Trevor and Karen. Trevor has been in the industry for some time as Karen explained. “Trevor has been installing carpet since he was 16 or 17. At 28 we bought our first flooring store. He’s been in the trade his whole life.” They returned from the conference enthusiastic about what they learnt and implementing different ideas. “It’s important for us to be part of Flooring Xtra. After being on our own for so long before joining, we need to remember there’s so much support on offer.” The store owners love the positive interactions with clients. “We enjoy interacting with clients and of course, all the great feedback that we receive.”
Over in Wagga Wagga, Debbie from Naturally Floored was enthused by their store’s win. “We’re uplifted after the conference; we were not expecting the win!” For her, it meant that their business direction was validated. “We’ll continue to pursue the catalogue and use it as a guide. We’re very happy.” They’re not new to the game in Wagga, having spent much of the last 22 years in the industry. “I had a short amount of time in another industry and was bored, I had to come back. That’s the thing about flooring, you don’t want to leave!” Debbie cites helping people through the selection process as her favourite part of the role. “I love supporting clients create their dream space and it’s great when they get excited and enjoy the process too.”
Finally, Nicole and Daniel from Mildura were the Victorian/ Tasmanian state winners. It came as a bit of a shock to the relatively new business owners. “We were blown away and very honoured.” Said Nicole. “We were not expecting this as it’s been such a short time frame!” Nicole and Daniel have had their store for two years, building the business from scratch, not that this is Daniel’s first time in the industry. “Daniel’s brother, father, uncle and cousin work in the industry too and Daniel has been working in flooring too. Myself on the other hand have come across from Pathology.” While it’s a world away from flooring, Nicole brings her love of working with people across to her new role. “There was a lot to learn but I’m really enjoying helping people, the contact with clients and working with all the beautiful styles and products.”
Congratulations to all of the winners this year. We look forward to coming together and celebrating results next time around!
