Engineered timber flooring can add a lot of character to a home, with authentic textures and tones of real timber, your floors will take centre stage. It’s also hard wearing, and with some care, it will last you for years to come. Timber is a very versatile product for floors as well, meaning many options are available to make your home truly yours. Here we explore some style options available if you want to bring timber floors into your interior design scheme.

What is Engineered Timber Flooring?

Engineered timber, often called floating flooring, is crafted by layering a real timber veneer over a stable timber-based core. Because the top layer of genuine timber is thinner than solid planks, these boards are considered a more sustainable choice, delivering the same natural timber look with far less raw material. This makes them an appealing option across a range of settings, including new home builds (where they offer a cost-effective alternative to solid timber), apartments (thanks to their acoustic benefits), and busy family homes (due to their durability and easy upkeep). Available in a wide variety of stains, finishes and board sizes, there’s a style to suit just about any interior. Much of the manufacturing is completed off-site, and the boards arrive pre-finished, allowing for quicker and cleaner installation.

When properly maintained, engineered timber floors can last for decades, adding both aesthetic value and long-term appeal to your home.

Choosing the Right Board Width

Wider timber flooring boards are popular, particularly in modern homes and open-plan spaces. Their broader format helps reduce the number of seams, creating a more streamlined and spacious feel, ideal for contemporary Australian interiors. This cleaner, more expansive look can even enhance smaller rooms by minimising visual clutter.

Narrow boards remain a classic option, particularly well-suited to traditional or heritage-style homes. They offer a sense of structure and elegance and are especially effective when used in patterned layouts such as herringbone or chevron, which highlight their timeless charm.

Blackbutt timber flooring, Australian species shines

Eucalyptus Pilularis, commonly known as Blackbutt, is a timber that is synonymous with the Australian landscape. It comes as no surprise that it’s also one of the country’s favourite materials for building flooring. Blackbutt is an Australian timber flooring that is durable, beautiful, warm in tone and transcends fads and fashion. With excellent technological advancements, the unique markings of the timber have also been replicated across timber-look products, such as hybrid, timber laminate flooring, and vinyl floorings.

Blackbutt is rich in characteristics and markings, and the tones are generally warm. It sits back beautifully against modern and classic styles while adding visual interest and earthiness. Teamed with other natural materials like wool, stone, linen and leather, Blackbutt flooring creates an enviable palette.

Other popular Australian timber flooring species

Other popular Australian timber flooring species include Tasmanian Oak and Spotted Gum, both prized for their natural beauty and durability. Tasmanian Oak offers a lighter, more neutral tone that suits various interior styles, while Spotted Gum is known for its rich colour variation and striking grain patterns. These native timbers bring warmth and character to a space and provide a hard-wearing surface ideal for busy households.

Timber herringbone flooring

Herringbone and chevron timber flooring refers to how the boards are arranged and laid. These specific designs are steeped in history, gracing the floors of homes and historic buildings. They are classic in style and add an instant level of sophistication to homes they are installed in. With this said, they will work in both contemporary and classic homes, apartments, and larger homes.

Herringbone is created by laying rectangular planks in a staggered zigzag pattern, where each plank meets at a 90-degree angle, creating a more traditional, textured look. In contrast, chevron features planks cut at an angle and joined to form a continuous V-shape, resulting in a cleaner, more streamlined appearance. Both patterns help draw the eye across the room, enhancing a sense of flow and movement.

Oak timber flooring

Oak timber flooring is a popular flooring material. The markings are subtle and classic, a timber style that has been used for many, many years, and for good reason. There are entire ranges of oak flooring across engineered timber and timber-look products, such as hybrid, timber laminate flooring, and vinyl. Each brings its own benefits while sharing the same unique look of oak.

How to mix and match timbers at home

Mixing timbers across applications, for example, timber flooring with a timber furniture piece of timber joinery, can cause some anxiety from a design perspective. Many people try to match different timbers as closely as possible, but forget that the unique nature of real timber is the best part! Don’t be afraid to mix timbers in the same space for an authentic feel. As a guide, it’s a harmonious look to keep the tone of the timbers similar, such as an underlying base of brown or grey. If you have a cool-coloured timber floor stain, teaming it with a red jarrah table might be jarring. Stick to a warm or cool palette to know they will flow, even if different species or designs. Utilise the floor visualiser to see how timber will look in an existing space for more confidence in your decision-making.

How to care for and clean timber flooring

Regular care and a few simple preventative steps go a long way to keep your timber flooring looking its best for years to come. Wipe up spills immediately with a dry or lightly damp cloth, and avoid excess moisture when cleaning. Dirt and grit can scratch the surface, so sweeping or vacuuming regularly with a soft-bristle head is essential. Limiting shoe wearing indoors is helpful; to encourage this, placing doormats at entrances can help reduce wear from tracked-in debris. Felt pads under furniture and protective mats under chairs prevent damage from movement, such as scratches.

Avoid steam mops, abrasive cleaners, and rubber-backed mats, and always use products specifically designed for timber flooring or just a damp mop. In high-traffic areas, consider adding rugs or runners, and be mindful of pet nails and high heels, which can cause surface damage. Lastly, maintain a well-ventilated indoor environment to protect your flooring from sunlight and humidity-related issues like fading or warping. FAQs

Are timber floors high maintenance?

Timber floors sit higher on the maintenance scale in the hard flooring world. But while laminate flooring, vinyl and hybrid flooring might require less maintenance, all flooring requires some level of care to keep it looking like new for longer. The look and feel of real timber is also aspirational, authentic and full of genuine character which can last for years if cared for. It also has the ability to be repaired in many cases, that is why we see beautiful old homes with original (restored, often) flooring.

Why choose engineered timber oak flooring?

Engineered boards are beautiful to look at as they’re made from layers of real timber. The character, markings and personality of natural timber shine through and add something to the interior design that’s authentic (although there are lots of great timber-look alternatives!). They’re relatively easy to maintain and are quick to install.

What flooring is good for coastal homes?
There are many great solutions for homes by the beach. It’s important to consider how much maintenance you would like to upkeep and the resilience of the flooring that will withstand the extra elements that coastal living incurs (we’re looking at you, sand!). Easy-to-maintain flooring also includes laminates and vinyls as well as easy-to clean-carpets. You can read more about this on our blog.
