What are Curtains?
Curtains are fabric drops used to cover windows, offering both functional and decorative benefits in the home. Typically hung from a curtain rod or track, they come in a wide variety of styles, materials, lengths, and colours to suit different interior design preferences. There’s something for every taste and interior design preference with fabric selections meaning you can add character with ease. Curtains serve several practical purposes: they provide privacy by blocking the view from outside, help control the amount of natural light entering a room, and can even improve insulation by keeping heat in during winter and blocking it out in summer.
From lightweight sheers that softly filter sunlight to heavy blackout curtains that darken a room entirely, there’s a curtain style for every need. In addition to their functionality, curtains play a key role in defining a room’s atmosphere. They can add softness, texture, and a sense of luxury, helping to frame windows and complete the look of a space. Whether used on their own or layered with blinds or sheers, curtains remain a versatile and timeless window treatment that blends beauty with everyday practicality.
What are the Benefits of Curtains?
Curtains offer a wide range of benefits, making them one of the most versatile window treatment options available. From adding character to improving comfort, they enhance both the look and functionality of any space.
Visual Appeal
One of the most notable benefits of curtains is their decorative impact. They introduce softness, texture, and warmth to a room, helping to create a finished, layered look. With an endless selection of fabrics, colours, patterns, and styles available, curtains can complement any interior—from minimalist and modern to classic and cosy. You can also customise details like the curtain header, rod style, and length to suit your taste and the architectural features of your home.
Everyday Practicalities
Curtains also offer strong practical advantages. They provide excellent privacy, especially in bedrooms and street-facing rooms. Thicker, lined curtains can also help with heat retention in winter and block out heat during the warmer months, supporting energy efficiency and creating a more comfortable indoor environment. Light control is another key benefit. Depending on the fabric weight and lining, curtains can softly filter daylight, reduce glare, or block it out entirely for better sleep.
Whether you’re looking to add visual appeal or improve your home’s thermal performance and privacy, curtains are a smart, flexible solution that can be tailored to your specific needs.
Where can I Install Curtains?
Curtains are a flexible design element that will work across a range of homes and commercial spaces. For classic homes, they fit perfectly, adding another layer of elegance. This also rings true in period homes. Curtains marry seamlessly with the timeless appeal of period homes. Contemporary homes can also benefit from the softness and warmth that layers of fabric offer. Texture, interest and warmth could be exactly what your new home needs. Sheer curtains are particularly popular in modern spaces, with the added softness but without the heaviness or busyness of fuller fabrics.
There are some spaces where curtains will not work. Certain window locations and conditions may incur additional charges or affect installation eligibility. A scaffold fee may apply for voids, and we cannot install curtains on entry sidelights narrower than 250mm, kitchen windows near fire or water hazards, or within shower cubicles. Installation on hinged doors will void the warranty, and any stair window deemed unsafe for installation will not be serviced.
Curtains can be installed in different ways. We offer three curtain width options to suit different window and wall sizes:
– Standard, where the curtain extends 100mm beyond each side of the window’s vertical architrave.
– Wall to Wall, where the curtain spans the entire width of the wall from corner to corner.
– Customised Width, which can be tailored to your specific needs in consultation with one of our experts.
What Style Features and Options are There?
When it comes to curtain design, there are several style features and customisation options to help you achieve the perfect look and functionality for your space. These include:
- Fabric Choices: Choose from a wide range of fabrics, including lightweight sheers and heavier blockout materials. For greater versatility, double track systems allow you to pair a sheer curtain with a solid fabric, offering both light filtering and privacy.
- Track Styles: The style of the curtain heading can dramatically change the look of your curtains. Popular options include pencil pleat for a more traditional appearance, or S-fold for a modern, wave-like finish.
- Pelmets: These can be added above the curtain track to conceal the hardware and provide a more polished, elegant look. Pelmets also help improve insulation by reducing light and air gaps.
- Returns: A return is an extended edge at each end of the curtain that allows it to wrap back towards the wall, reducing light gaps and enhancing insulation. Flooring Xtra recommends using returns for a more complete and functional finish, although they are optional.
- Curtain Width Options: You can choose to have your curtain span just across the window or from wall to wall, depending on the effect and coverage you prefer.
These features allow for a highly tailored window treatment that suits both your aesthetic and practical needs. Pencil Pleat Specifications
Pencil pleat curtains feature a 75mm heading tape, creating a classic gathered look. They are installed on a simple, non-decorative track fitted with runners and plain end caps, offering a clean and understated finish that suits a variety of interior styles. Pencil pleat is a more tailored and classic look in comparison to an S-fold style. If you feel like your home would benefit from a layer of elegance, this header-style might be the perfect fit for you,
S-Fold Specifications
At Flooring Xtra, S-fold curtains are crafted using hook tape, suitable for both blockout and sheer fabrics, creating a smooth, continuous wave-like finish. These curtains are typically installed on a 25mm decorative track with runners and plain end caps, offering a stylish and modern appearance. For a more discreet look, especially in spaces with square-set ceilings or under pelmets, a non-decorative track with the same runner and end cap system is also available. This flexible installation option allows you to tailor the curtain finish to suit your room’s design and architectural features. S-fold curtains are a popular design style in Australia, their blend of modern aesthetic with a fresh, clean look suits the modern architecture that is prevalent across the country.
Double Track Specifications
Double track curtains or drapes offer the best of both worlds. Teaming a blockout curtains on one track with a sheer curtain behind it means there’s the practicality of privacy, light control and flexible aesthetics. Double curtain track options are available with different heading styles depending on placement. For window furnishing, pencil pleat headings are used. For room furnishing, you can choose between pencil pleat or S-fold headings.
What are Curtain Pelmets?
Looking to give your window furnishings a refined and finished touch? Pelmets could be just what you need. Positioned above your blinds or curtains, pelmets cleverly conceal curtain rods, tracks, or any hardware, offering a sleek and seamless appearance. Not only do they elevate the overall look of a space, but they also boost insulation—helping keep your home warmer in winter and cooler during the warmer months. Whether you prefer timber, fabric, or an upholstered finish, pelmets can be customised to suit your personal style and interior palette. If you like the idea of disguising the functional elements of your window dressings, pelmets offer a smart and stylish solution.
With their flexibility in design, pelmets can be made to suit a range of interiors—from contemporary spaces to more traditional homes. Whether you’re after clean lines or a more detailed finish, they’re a great way to enhance your décor while offering practical benefits like reduced heat loss. If you’re curious about how pelmets could work in your home, your local Flooring Xtra team is here to help with expert advice and inspiration.
Key Benefits:
• Seamless Style – Conceals hardware for a tidy, sophisticated finish.
• Thermal Efficiency – Helps regulate indoor temperature throughout the seasons.
• Sound Dampening – Solid construction can assist in softening outside noise.
• Hassle-Free Installation – Easily added to complement your existing curtains or blinds.
Curtain Width and Track Options
When planning your curtain installation, it’s important to consider both curtain width and track placement. The side stack, the space your curtains occupy when drawn open to one side, typically measures around one-third of the total curtain width and may extend slightly into the window opening. There are several track installation options available, including the standard position (150mm above the architrave), just below the cornice (approximately 50mm), or mounted directly to the ceiling—this last option is only suitable for square-set ceilings.
Custom track positioning can also be arranged by speaking with your Flooring Xtra consultant. Please note that Flooring Xtra does not supply curved tracks, and for raked or pitched ceilings, the track will always be installed level with the floor.
What Other Window Treatment Styles are Available?
Roller Blinds
also known as Holland blinds—have quickly become one of the most sought-after window furnishings for modern homes, and for good reason. They offer a clean, understated appearance that suits a wide range of interiors, while delivering on practicality, ease of use, and affordability. As the demand for roller blinds has grown, so too has the variety of materials, colours, and finishes available, making it easier than ever to personalise them to suit your space.
Mounted directly onto the window frame, roller blinds deliver a minimal, space-saving solution ideal for contemporary interiors. Their streamlined design sits close to the glass, making them perfect for smaller spaces or rooms where a neat and tidy aesthetic is preferred. Not only do they look great, but they also serve a protective function—helping to shield your floors, furniture, and artwork from harsh sunlight.
One of the key benefits of roller blinds is their ability to blend seamlessly into the background or, if desired, make a bold statement. Opt for a neutral colour that matches your walls to keep the look subtle and cohesive, or select a darker shade like charcoal for a more dramatic, modern effect. Textured fabrics offer a middle ground—adding depth and interest without overwhelming the space. To soften their appearance, consider layering roller blinds with curtains or sheers for a more traditional or elegant finish.
Panel Blinds
This style is a great choice for large windows, sliding doors, or expansive glass areas. Operating on a horizontal track system, they feature wide fabric panels that slide open and closed smoothly, stacking neatly to one side when drawn. While they don’t fully retract like roller blinds, their broader format offers excellent light coverage and ease of use, especially in open-plan areas.
These blinds work best in contemporary interiors, thanks to their minimal and geometric look. Though not typically decorative, they can still enhance a space with the right fabric choice. Think, textured weaves or soft neutrals for added visual appeal. When styling, keep in mind the overall palette of the room: if your space already features strong colours or patterns, go for something subtle in the panels. If your room is more neutral, darker shades or bold textures can add contrast and depth.
Roman Blinds
For those who love a more traditional or tailored look, Roman blinds are a beautiful option. These fabric-based blinds fold into neat horizontal pleats when raised, creating a soft, structured finish. They’re well-suited to period-style homes, coastal cottages, or any space that calls for warmth and sophistication.
Roman blinds add texture and character to a room and are particularly effective in deeper window frames. They also contribute to insulation and privacy when closed. Available in a range of fabrics, from simple linens to decorative prints, they offer a versatile solution for those wanting both style and function. Consider matching the blind fabric to elements in your room, like cushions or rugs, for a cohesive, curated feel.
Vertical Blinds
This style remains a practical choice for both homes and offices. Their adjustable slats allow precise control over light and privacy, making them especially useful in rooms with large sliding doors or full-length windows. While they may not be the trendiest option, vertical blinds offer functionality and durability, with modern fabric and colour updates now available to suit more contemporary tastes.
Venetian Blinds
Venetians are a classic style that continues to hold appeal for their elegant, adjustable slats. Whether you choose timber, timber-look, or aluminium, Venetian blinds allow for excellent light control and add a polished finish to any room. Timber options add warmth and texture, perfect for living areas or bedrooms, while aluminium versions offer a more minimalist, modern feel, ideal for bathrooms, kitchens, and laundries.
Shutters
This classic design brings a sense of permanence and structure to a space. Crafted from timber or timber-look materials, they provide superior light and privacy control, while adding charm and architectural interest. Particularly suited to coastal, country, and traditional homes, shutters are often finished in white or soft wood tones. Though they require space to install and may reduce natural light slightly, their timeless look and durability make them a worthwhile investment.
How to Care for Curtains
To keep your window furnishings looking their best, some level of routine cleaning and care is essential. Before starting any cleaning process, always test in an inconspicuous spot to ensure the method won’t damage the material. In most cases, dust and surface debris can be removed using a soft brush, feather duster, or clean, dry cloth. A dry sponge may also be used to gently wipe the surface. Keep in mind that different types of window coverings may require specific care techniques.
Curtains, in particular, benefit from regular vacuuming using a suitable upholstery attachment. This helps prevent dust build-up from settling into the fabric over time. If your curtains need a deeper clean, refer to the care instructions provided on the product label.
