What are roman blinds?

This timeless style offers more structure than roller or panel blinds, with a strong emphasis on fabric. Roman blinds introduce a soft, tailored feel that suits interiors with classic charm—making them ideal for homes that highlight period features or traditional architectural details. They typically feature a slim timber baton and operate via a pull cord, lifting the fabric upward in neat folds.

Roman blinds are a practical option for deeper window recesses, adding both interest and elegance to a space. When lowered, they offer privacy and insulation, although they’re not as adaptable in terms of light control as slatted styles—unless paired with a sheer layer behind. They present a gentler, more decorative alternative to the mechanical lines of panel, roller, or vertical blinds.

Their versatility allows them to work across a variety of interior styles, from coastal and country homes to classic or heritage-inspired spaces. The overall effect depends largely on the fabric choice. Coastal homes often benefit from linen-look textures for a relaxed, breezy feel, while period homes may lean toward floral or striped designs for a more traditional look. If the room is already styled, consider drawing colours from existing elements like upholstery, rugs, or artwork for a cohesive finish.

What are the benefits of roman blinds?

Roman Blinds

Roman blinds are a beautiful addition to any home and with it they also bring lots of benefits. From practical benefits to aesthetics, there’s a lot to love about roman blinds!

  • Roman blinds are a popular window treatment choice thanks to their blend of classic elegance and everyday practicality. Offering both aesthetic appeal and functional advantages, they are well-suited to a range of interior styles—from traditional and coastal homes to modern, minimalist spaces.
  • One of the standout benefits of Roman blinds is their timeless design. With neatly folded fabric that stacks evenly when raised and hangs flat when lowered, they add a refined and tailored look to any room. The emphasis on fabric allows for endless styling opportunities, whether you prefer soft linen roman blinds for a relaxed feel or bold prints and colours to make a statement.
  • Roman blinds are also space-efficient. Unlike bulky curtains, they sit neatly within the window frame, making them ideal for smaller rooms or spaces where you want to maintain a clean, uncluttered look. This is especially useful in kitchens or homes with deep-set windows.
  • Functionally, roman blinds provide excellent light control and privacy. When fully lowered, roman blinds block out light effectively—especially if lined with a blockout backing. For added insulation and energy efficiency, thermal linings can help regulate room temperature by keeping heat in during winter and out during summer.
  • Another advantage is the customisability of roman blinds. They can be tailored to suit unique window sizes and are available in a variety of fabrics, linings, and finishes. This makes them a flexible choice for rooms with specific design or functional needs.
  • Finally, roman blinds can also be layered with sheers or curtains for a more dramatic or textured effect, allowing for even greater control over light and privacy. Their blend of beauty, practicality, and versatility makes roman blinds a smart and stylish choice for any home.

What roman blind styles are available?

In a space that’s yet to be styled, clients should decide whether they want the blinds to stand out or blend in. One of the wonderful things about roman blinds is the choices you can make to tailor them to your home and desired interior design style. Roman blinds in modern homes will soften the space and feel right at home in a more classically styled interior.

To create a statement, opt for contrasting colours or bold fabrics—darker shades offer greater impact. Patterns also influence mood: florals feel timeless and classic, stripes can bridge modern and traditional styles, and geometric prints add a clean, contemporary edge. For a more understated approach, match the fabric closely to the wall colour to keep the look subtle and refined.

All Roman blinds will have continuous metal ball chains. All chain positions will be nominated on the quote and due to child safety laws they will be installed according to current standards. Panel spacing will vary according to the drop of your roman blind. These will be automatically calculated by the Flooring Xtra team. If you have more than one roman blind in a room with varying drops, Flooring Xtra will line up the spacing for you. This may result in your bottom panels being different sizes to each other. The head rail will project into the room by 40mm and the stack height is usually between 250 – 330mm, or the height of the first fold on your roman blind.

Will roman blinds work in my home?

Roman blinds will work in many situations, regardless of window style however your local Flooring Xtra team will assess the room and window to confirm suitability. There are some situations where installation is not possible, including where it may be a fire hazard, where the installation may be unsafe, in wet areas, in side-light windows less than 250mm wide and in a shower cubical.

Roman blinds are of course a practical addition, however they also offer a decorative layer to the room due to their tactile nature. Roman blinds are a popular choice in the following spaces:

  • Bedrooms:
Their fabric-focused design provides warmth and privacy. Bedroom roman blinds are an excellent choice. Blockout linings can be added for better light control and sleep quality.
  • Dining Rooms:
For formal or casual dining spaces, Roman blinds offer a clean, tailored appearance. They’re particularly effective in period homes or interiors with traditional detailing.
  • Home Offices:
Roman blinds can bring a calm, professional feel to a home office. Light-filtering fabrics are ideal for reducing glare while maintaining natural light.

How are roman blinds installed?

The benefits of professional window treatment installation are immense. While there are a number of projects you can take on at home, installing roman blinds is best left to the experts!

Roman blinds should be installed in a certain way for optimal window coverage. To achieve this, they will be installed 250mm above the top architrave, 20mm past the outer edge of each side architrave and up to 40mm below the bottom architrave. On the same elevation, romans will be installed at the same height unless the height difference between the windows/ sliding doors is greater than 200mm. If you wish to deviate from this, chat to your friendly Flooring Xtra team.

  • Safety:
Safety is essential in homes with children or pets. Professionals understand and follow safety guidelines, installing features like cordless blinds or cord-tensioning systems to minimise potential risks. Child safety devices are required by law to be installed on all roman blind chains hanging below 1600mm from the floor. Chains above 1600mm are exempt. The chain must not form a loop exceeding 220mm in circumference. Flooring Xtra will install the child safety device in the most secure position.
  • Long-Term Value:
Proper installation can extend the lifespan of your blinds. By avoiding strain and improper use, professionally installed blinds tend to operate more smoothly and stay in good condition for longer.

  • Enhanced Aesthetic Appeal:
A professional finish can make a big difference. Straight, level blinds that fit perfectly enhance the overall style of your room and create a cohesive, polished look.

How can I care for my roman blinds?

Now that you have made your selection and had your new roman blinds installed, it’s important to care for them as best you can to ensure they look like new for a long time to come. There are a few things you can do to maintain their longevity.

  • When windows are open, window furnishings should be in the open position to avoid stretching and distortion of the fabrics.
  • Keep your blinds free from dust by regularly dusting. You can also carefully vacuum your blinds, making sure that you use the brush attachment. A lint roller might also be a helpful tool.
  • If there’s a mark or stain, carefully spot clean or if you’re unsure, call in the professionals to deal with it! Always remember to dab a stain with a clean, damp cloth rather than rub it. Stay clear of harsh cleaning chemicals that might cause more harm than good by damaging the fabric.

What other styles of window treatments are available?

There are many window treatment styles that could suit your home or office, from sleek modern blinds to more tailored, classic designs. Your ideal choice will depend on your interior style, functional needs, and budget. Below are some of the most common options to help guide your decision:

Roller Blinds

Dual Roller Blinds

Often known as “Holland blinds,” roller blinds are one of the most widely chosen window coverings for contemporary homes. They’re celebrated for their practicality, durability, and affordability, making them a favourite among homeowners. With increasing popularity has come a broader selection of fabrics and finishes, including blockout options, so you can find something to suit your décor.

These blinds mount directly to the window frame for a streamlined, minimal look that complements clean, modern interiors. They’re also easy to operate and serve a practical role by protecting your furniture and floors from direct sunlight. One limitation to note is their binary nature—roller blinds are either open or closed, offering limited light control. Some options now include dual-layer systems, combining a sheer and a blockout fabric, giving you more versatility throughout the day.

Thanks to their understated profile, roller blinds won’t compete with other décor. Add sheer curtains for softness or drapes for a more traditional touch. Choose a matching wall colour for a seamless look, or go bold with charcoal or textured fabrics for a contemporary statement.

Panel Blinds

panel blinds in living room

Panel blinds glide horizontally across a track and are ideal for wider openings like large windows or sliding doors. Unlike roller blinds, they don’t roll away completely—they stack to one side, which can slightly limit natural light when open.

Their clean, linear look suits modern homes, and while they’re not overly decorative, textured or patterned fabrics can add depth. For rooms with already bold features, a flat neutral tone works well. In more muted spaces, consider a rich colour or texture to make the blinds stand out. Panel blinds are both stylish and practical, with a sleek finish that suits a variety of interiors.

Vertical Blinds

Vertical Roman Blinds

Vertical blinds are made up of slats that tilt and draw across a horizontal track, offering great light and privacy control. They’re especially practical for larger windows and sliding doors, often seen in offices and traditional homes.

While not the most cutting-edge in design, vertical blinds are versatile and functional. They’re available in various colours and finishes, so you can still find an option that complements your space, much like with roller or Holland blinds.

Shutters

Shutters are a timeless and sturdy window treatment that offers superior light control and privacy. Typically made from timber or timber-look materials, they work well in period homes, beachside properties, and modern spaces that want to introduce a classic element.

Keep in mind that shutters require installation space and may reduce light in already dim rooms. White shutters are crisp and elegant, especially against soft neutral walls. Timber-stained options add warmth and a modern edge, ideal for casual spaces with a bright, airy feel.

Venetian Blinds

Venetian blinds combine a classic look with modern functionality. They offer excellent control over light and privacy with adjustable slats and come in various materials and slat sizes to suit different rooms.

Timber and timber-look Venetians bring warmth and are perfect for bathrooms, kitchens, and laundries. Aluminium versions offer a sleeker aesthetic and come in a wide range of colours. Easy to maintain, they’re great for compact areas where horizontal lines can help create the illusion of space.

Drapes

Drapes elevate any space, bringing elegance, softness, or drama depending on your fabric and style choices. Beyond their decorative appeal, they also offer great insulation—keeping heat out in summer and in during winter, helping with energy efficiency.

In traditional homes, drapes make a stunning statement. In contemporary interiors, lighter fabrics like linen can create a modern, breezy vibe. Rich colours, trims, and tie-backs suit more formal settings. Organic prints like florals flow naturally, while stripes may disrupt the visual line. Pairing your drapery with coordinating cushions or upholstery gives the room a harmonious, polished finish.

There are many window treatment options available and each has their own unique aesthetic and practical benefits. What’s right for you and your home or office will depend on personal taste, budget and the actual windows itself. Roman blinds could be the best solution for your needs and if you’re unsure, know that your local Flooring Xtra store is ready to help you make the decision. New window treatments make a big difference to your home and are a significant investment, just like flooring. Lean on the knowledge and experience of the professionals!
