What are window shutters?

Window shutters (or plantation shutters) are solid or louvred coverings used to enhance the appearance, functionality, and protection of windows. They add so much to the comfort and visual appeal of homes and come in various timber or timber-look materials to suit any style or application. Traditionally, shutters were used for practical purposes—to provide privacy, regulate sunlight, and offer protection from weather or intruders. Today, while those functions still apply, shutters are also valued for their aesthetic appeal and are very popular in Australian homes across many building styles.

Beyond looks and light control, indoor shutters can improve insulation and energy efficiency. By reducing heat gain in the summer and heat loss in the winter, they contribute to a more comfortable living environment. Whether chosen for style or function, window shutters remain a timeless element in architecture and interior design.

Flooring Xtra offers various material options and will assist you in choosing the best configuration to suit your needs as well as the window style and construction. Leaning on the experts will put your mind at ease from the selection process through to installation and beyond.

What are the benefits of window shutters?

The benefits of internal shutters are numerous from both a practical and appearance perspective.

  • Shutters provide excellent light control and in turn, work well to control the temperature within the home. Shutters might not allow as much light into some rooms as other treatments, depending on the window style. If maximum light is what you’re hoping to achieve, let Flooring Xtra walk through the best option for your particular home and situation.
  • The ability to adjust the shutter louvres means that privacy control is optimal. You can adjust shutters for privacy while still allowing some light into the room.
  • Shutter materials and colours can be modified to suit your preferences. There are also some materials on offer that are suitable for wet areas like a bathroom.
  • Shutters offer timeless appeal and are sophisticated in appearance. They work across a range of interior design styles and building types. They are a fresh and clean design too, working well in homes where a classic look is desired. They also look wonderful from the exterior of the building, and their distinct features are visible from the street. Shutters are easy to maintain with their hard louvres only needing dusting or wiping down.
  • Durability is another feature of shutters, with their material make-up meaning they can withstand daily adjusting and use with minimal effect.

·  Window shutters also offer ventilation when they are open. While still allowing for a level of privacy and light control, ventilation is possible through the louvres.

What are window shutters made from?

Flooring Xtra offers several material options within the range of shutters. When choosing window shutters, it’s important to select the right material for both function and style. Here are three popular categories, each with unique features and benefits:

Category 1: Woodlore® Shutters

Woodlore shutters are crafted from a high-quality engineered wood composite, coated with a medical-grade polypropylene finish. This coating adds excellent durability and resistance to wear and tear, making the shutters a long-lasting choice for everyday use. The core material is a blend of timber fibres and strong adhesives, forming a dense, stable product that resists warping or cracking over time. Engineered wood is commonly used in furniture manufacturing around the world, and it translates beautifully into shutter design thanks to its strength and consistency. These shutters are suitable for dry indoor areas only, such as living rooms, bedrooms, and studies.

Category 2: Woodlore® Plus Waterproof Shutters

Ideal for wet or humid environments, Woodlore Plus Waterproof shutters are made from ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene), a highly durable thermoplastic—famously the same material used to make LEGO bricks. This composition makes them completely waterproof, perfect for areas like bathrooms, laundries, and kitchens. Despite their water resistance, they maintain the elegant appearance of traditional shutters, offering a sleek, low-maintenance solution where moisture is a concern.

Category 3: Normandy® Shutters

Normandy shutters are made from Phoenixwood, sourced from the Phoenix Tree (Firmiana simplex), which belongs to the same family as the cacao tree. Known for its lightweight yet strong properties, Phoenixwood is classified as a hardwood and is valued for its attractive grain and smooth finish. These shutters are suitable for dry areas only, offering a premium, natural timber aesthetic ideal for adding warmth and character to interior spaces.

Each shutter type is designed with specific environments in mind, ensuring both performance and visual appeal. Your local Flooring Xtra store that offers window treatments will ensure the right material and product is selected for your unique home and needs. All hinge colours are determined depending on the shutter colour requested. This is completed by Flooring Xtra and will be matched to the closest colour to the shutter selected. With the exception of Woodlore Plus Waterproof shutters – these will always include stainless steel hinges, suitable for wet areas.

What type of windows can you install shutters on?

While window shutters are a beautiful addition to many homes, there are some windows that are unable to have shutters installed on them due to their construction, dimensions or functionality. If you’re unsure that shutters are the right fit for your particular home, know that Flooring Xtra is here to help!

  • Shutters installed to a window will be hinged and include functional panels and tiltable blades. Shutters installed within a void will be fixed in place and only the blades will tilt.
  • Flooring Xtra will not install shutters to hinged or sliding doors.
  • To fit shutters within a window reveal, we require 70mm internal clearance. The shutter blades will still protrude into the room when in the open position. Please take note of any window winders or obstructions that may impede the shutter.
  • All windows are different, and therefore there may be some obstructions such as window winders, mullions, or transom bars. Flooring Xtra’s installers will determine any obstructions at their check measure.
  • There are other restrictions that apply to all window treatments and Flooring Xtra will not install blinds where there might be a fire hazard, within a shower cubical or Entry side light windows where the window is narrower than 250mm. There are also restrictions on hinged doors – if installed onto hinged doors it will void the warranty.

What shutter configurations are available?

There are many configurations that window plantation shutters are available in and the best option for your home will generally come down to the size and style of your window. A shutter consists of a panel, top and bottom rail (and mid-rail sometimes) and within the frame, louvres. For larger shutters, midrails assist with the integrity of the panels and prevent them from sagging. If the drop of your window is greater than 1520mm, a midrail is required. If more than 2032mm, you’ll require two midrails. Midrails are also required if there are window winders.

Flooring Xtra offers two frame options, Z frame and L frame. It is possible to do either with 3 sides if there are obstructions. Flooring Xtra will guide you through the process to determine which is best suited to your home. They will also assess for any obstructions. All windows are different, and therefore there may be some obstructions such as window winders, mullions, or transom bars. Flooring Xtra’s installers will determine any obstructions at their check measure and will also confirm panel configuration.

The inclusion of flyscreens is also important. When selecting the mounting position with your sales consultant it’s important to let them know if you’re considering the addition of fly-screens on the window in the future, as there may not be enough space if reveal mount is selected. To fit shutters within a window reveal, we require 70mm internal clearance. The shutter blades will still protrude into the room when in the open position. Please take note of any window winders or obstructions that may impede the shutter.

What other style of window treatments are available?

Roller Blinds

Roller Blinds

Also known as “Holland blinds,” roller blinds are among the most popular window treatments for modern homes. Valued for their simplicity, durability, and affordability, they’ve become a top choice for homeowners. As their popularity has surged, so has the variety of available fabrics and finishes—including blockout options—allowing you to tailor them to your design preferences.

Mounted directly onto the window frame, roller blinds deliver a clean, streamlined aesthetic that pairs well with contemporary interiors. Their simple mechanism makes them easy to operate, while also protecting your flooring and furnishings from harsh sunlight.

That said, roller blinds offer limited light control—they are either fully open or fully closed. For greater flexibility, dual roller blinds (featuring a sheer and a blockout layer) are available, allowing you to switch between filtered light and complete privacy.

With their understated design, roller blinds won’t distract from more decorative elements in a room. You can soften their appearance by layering them with sheers or curtains for a more classic look. For a subtle approach, choose a colour that matches the wall paint. If you’re after contrast, charcoal or deep grey tones make a bold impact, while textured fabrics provide a refined, visually interesting middle ground.

Panel Blinds

Panel blinds operate on a horizontal track, sliding across fixed panels to offer better light control than roller blinds. However, they don’t retract completely—when open, they stack to one side, potentially blocking some light. They’re particularly well-suited for wide windows or sliding doors, where their layout shines.

With a sleek and contemporary profile, panel blinds are perfect for modern interiors. While they aren’t typically used as a statement piece, textured fabrics can add interest and depth. If your space already features bold design elements, stick to neutral tones. In more minimal spaces, darker hues or textured finishes can create a striking focal point. Panel blinds strike a balance between clean aesthetics and functional light control.

Roman Blinds

Roman Blinds

Roman blinds feature a soft, structured fold that brings classic elegance to any room. Unlike roller or panel styles, they place more emphasis on fabric and are ideal for rooms with traditional features or architectural detailing. Operated with a discreet cord system and usually built with a slim baton, they offer a tidy, tailored appearance.

These blinds suit deeper window frames and offer solid insulation and privacy when closed. However, they’re less adjustable than slatted styles unless paired with a sheer curtain. Roman blinds complement a wide range of interiors—from coastal and country to heritage homes. Linen-look materials suit relaxed, beachy spaces, while patterns like florals or stripes pair beautifully with traditional décor. Matching your blind fabric to tones in existing soft furnishings like rugs or chairs can help tie the room together.

For a bolder approach, opt for statement colours or prints to make the blinds a feature. Dark hues and strong patterns add character, while neutral tones matched to the wall paint create a seamless, subtle finish.

Vertical Blinds

Vertical Roman Blinds

Vertical blinds consist of slats that glide along a horizontal track, offering excellent control over light and privacy. By tilting the slats, you can adjust how much light enters a space—making them a practical choice for both homes and offices.

Although not the most cutting-edge in terms of design, vertical blinds remain functional and versatile. They suit both traditional and modern properties and are especially effective in commercial settings. Available in a wide range of colours and finishes, they can easily be styled to suit your interior—similar to roller or Holland blinds.

Venetian Blinds

Venetian blinds offer a blend of timeless charm and modern appeal. Like shutters, they provide excellent control over privacy and light but are typically more cost-effective. With adjustable horizontal slats available in various widths, they can be crafted from timber, timber-look materials, or aluminium.

Timber styles add warmth to kitchens, bathrooms, and laundries, while aluminium versions offer a minimalist look and come in a wide range of colours. They’re low-maintenance, easy to clean, and ideal for compact spaces, where the horizontal slats can make the room appear more spacious.

Drapes

Drapery brings an instant sense of elegance and softness to interiors. Depending on the fabric and style, drapes can evoke a feeling of luxury or a more laid-back aesthetic. Beyond visual appeal, they offer excellent insulation—helping to keep spaces cooler in summer and warmer in winter.

Drapes are especially striking in period or traditional homes but can be adapted to suit modern spaces with the right fabric choice. Lightweight materials like linen work well in contemporary settings, while richer fabrics with trims and tie-backs suit classic designs. Organic patterns such as florals drape gracefully, whereas stripes may appear distorted. Coordinating your drapes with cushions or upholstery can add a cohesive, polished look.
