As Space Invaders wraps up another brilliant season, it’s time to look back at the invaluable wisdom and practical tips the show’s expert hosts have shared with Aussie households. From decluttering strategies to interior design trends and renovation advice, here’s what stood out this year with Peter, Angie and Cherie at the helm.
• Start Small: Tackle a single drawer or a small area first. It’s less overwhelming and helps you build momentum.
• Too Much Stuff, Not Too Little Space: Clutter usually comes from having excess belongings, not a lack of storage. Assess your current storage and work backwards from there to declutter.
The 2026 interior design trend is moving away from the idea of a “perfect” home. Forget highly curated, Instagram-ready spaces; real homes are about comfort, personality and cosiness. Let your space reflect who you are, not just what looks good on a screen. In terms of your home, this means embracing collections and meaningful items while still utilising storage and display systems to ensure “homely” doesn’t turn into clutter.
Rugs have emerged as the perfect accessory this season. They anchor your furniture, soften hard floors, and reduce echo in decluttered spaces. Plus, they add texture and help bridge the gap between modern renovations and the original era of your home. This season, we saw some stunning rug choices that brought rooms to life! We were so happy to see designs from our Rug Store across the season.
Upcycling and repurposing furniture isn’t just budget-friendly; it’s also great for the planet. Transform old pieces, enjoy the creative process, and maintain a connection to a piece’s history. Don’t forget to display your treasures and why not change things up by giving existing décor a new spot in your home.
Another incredibly transformation
The right flooring can make or break a renovation. Consider the style and era of your home before choosing materials. This season showcased everything from soft, modern carpets that honour a home’s heritage to stunning timber floors, realistic timber-look laminates, and timber hybrid flooring options. For example, in episode two, the 1930s heritage home renovation featured the high-performance Green Cape Glenview carpet; a perfect blend of liveability and respect for the home’s era.
To keep clutter at bay, decluttering expert Peter suggests adopting the “one in, one out” rule: for every new purchase, something of equal value should leave your home. This works best when the whole household is on board. For example, buying a new pair of shoes? Time to say goodbye to an old pair!
Procrastination is clutter’s best friend. Don’t put things off. Doing small tasks now prevents them from becoming overwhelming mountains later (who doesn’t know that feeling?). Whether it’s laundry or that growing stack of boxes in the garage, tackling jobs straight away helps you stay on top of daily chores and keep your home tidy.
As we say goodbye to another season of Space Invaders, these expert tips will help you create a home that’s comfortable, practical and uniquely yours. You can catch up on the Space Invaders season 6 on 9Now.
What is a hybrid flooring?
Hybrid flooring combines the attributes of vinyl and laminate flooring. It features the rigidity of laminate flooring (meaning it can be installed in a floating system) and the wear layer performance characteristics of vinyl planks (very resilient!). It’s a great option for busy family homes.
Is laminate flooring professionally installed?Flooring is best installed by professionals who are highly skilled and experienced. They have all the necessary equipment and are there to troubleshoot any issues that may arise.
Why choose mid-range timber flooring over lighter or darker tones?
Mid-tone timber styles offer a warmth and charm to homes both modern and classic. They are easy to live with and accessorise and will be timeless in appeal. They can also highlight natural timber markings beautifully. They wont feel enclosed like some darker products might nor will they show dirt and pet hairs as easily as a light timber floor.
