Space Invaders is back for season three. Here are 5 decluttering tips we took away from the first few episodes.

Season three of our favourite decluttering and home renovation series, Space Invaders has just begun and like the previous seasons, we’re set to see some truly inspiring stories, people and transformations. The team of professionals (Peter Walsh, decluttering expert, Cherie Barber, renovation queen and treasure hunter, Angie Kent) are again working with homes and families that struggle with hoarding, clutter and the emotional struggles that this can come with. In every episode (airing on Channel 9) we see people calling out for help, feeling overwhelmed with the task of decluttering their residential spaces. Flooring Xtra is once again involved with the series, providing beautiful flooring in many of the episodes, adding to the renovation transformation these homes truly deserve.

Each episode is an opportunity to learn something new or find a helpful “take-away”. Here are five inspiring ideas for decluttering and simplifying your home.

Changing mindset

Watching Peter work with the families and individuals to work through and process their situation is truly inspiring. He suggests re-framing or re-thinking decluttering if it is causing stress or you’re finding it difficult to part with items. Instead of seeing the process of “getting rid of things”, he believes we should think of it as “finding things of value and beauty” for your home. The simple shift in thinking can help to declutter with more ease and less emotional attachment to items.

Find different ways to preserve memories

In episode two, single mother Jill was struggling to get rid of her daughter’s many, many dance costumes (200!). The costumes were no longer used and didn’t fit although the memories attached to these items were stopping Jill from parting ways. Peter tried to convince Jill to give them to another family but in her hesitation, he suggested she could preserve memories in other ways. Framing a photo of the girls wearing the outfits and adding a cutting of the fabric could be a beautiful way to maintain the memory without the physical object staying.

Make some money or help others (or both!)

During the process of decluttering Peter helps people part with loads of stuff. Many of the items are donated which is a fantastic way to help part with items no longer needed. Charities will benefit from the donations and new owners can enjoy the clothes, books or objects too (which is great for the environment!). Treasure hunter Angie also finds “hidden” money in the clutter. Thinking of clutter as money or helping people can be a great way to feel better about parting with their things.

Episode two also sees Cherie seek an estate agent evaluation of the property, before and after the decluttering and interior renovation. The family were shocked to learn how much their property had increased in value! The family were thrilled with their newly renovated home, including their new hybrid flooring, fresh paint, storage, shag rug, introduction of colour and new roller blinds.

Discovering if there are any “blocks” in your decluttering journey

In episode two, Peter discovers that Jill’s ex-partner still has many things in their home. These objects take up space physically but also mentally. Letting go and moving on can be very difficult with the daily reminders that Jill faced of her past. Each episode explores variations of this theme. It can be useful to understand if there’s a reason you don’t want to get rid of clutter, whether it be a memory, a past experience or relationship.

Celebrate your achievements

When you live with clutter and find it difficult to let go of objects, everything you part with should be considered a win. You should feel great about what you have decluttered and tidied! Take a photo before and after the process so you can see how far you have come and what you achieved. Look objectively at the space and how much better, clearer and cleaner it looks. Well done!
