Floor rugs have the ability to transform a home. They can inject colour, texture, layers of interest and warmth. A rug breathes new life into an interior while protecting the floor underneath as well. They work in entryways, kids spaces, living rooms, at the end of the bed, hallways…. the list goes on. Here’s 5 designs that will lift any space calling out for another layer.

Evoke Rugs

This range of rugs draws from both trends past and present. With the transitional rug aesthetic so popular now, Evoke Rugs take inspiration from traditional patterns and merges with a contemporary palette and stylised fading appearance. Available in a broad range of colours, there is certain to be a rug from this collection which will capture your heart!

Evoke Range Benefits:

  • It will add colour and interest to an otherwise lacking space
  • The range is available in different sizes to suit any space (always err on the side of a large rug if you’re uncertain so it looks considered and not “floating” in the room)
  • The colours are rich and varied for a character-filled appearance
  • The polypropylene fibres make it appropriate for kids and pets

Zanzibar Rugs

The Zanzibar rug, in all its colourful, patterned glory is set to be the feature piece in any home. Intricate and globally inspired patterns in striking designs will enhance a room calling out for a pop of colour or character. It’s cosy and resilient polypropylene fibre also makes it a family friendly option.

Zanzibar Range Benefits:

  • The colours are playful and interesting. The palette lends itself to children’s spaces, bohemian styles or homes that are layered and warm
  • The polypropylene fibres are durable and welcome high-traffic, kids and pets
  • The patterns of this rug range will add visual interest and drama to a room that feels underwhelming

Marrakesh Rugs

This indulgent rug is a pleasure to sink your toes into. A 20mm soft pile is expertly woven using polypropylene and available in a range of colours and patterns. The tasselled edge adds interest while the multicoloured diamond pattern draws from traditional Moroccan Berber rugs. The Marrakesh rug is a true statement piece which is also available in a runner style shape as seen here, elevating a laundry space to the next level!

Marrakesh Range Benefits:

  • Marrakesh is warm and character-rich. The thick pile is relaxing to rest on, read on or play board games on!
  • The rug would work well at the end of a bed, in a casual living space or even in an entrance
  • The Marrakesh runner rug adds a practical but beautiful statement to hallways, kitchens or laundries

Round rugs

A round rug is a style that suits quite specific spaces, but when you get it right… it changes the whole room dynamic. Entryways, rooms with angled walls or spaces where the furniture legs may not be anchoring the rug are calling out for round rugs. They gently move the eye around the space and create balance in awkwardly shaped rooms. The jute material of the Atrium rug (image below) adds a casual feel while being practical too (hello kids rooms!).

Round Rug Benefits:

  • Round rugs can create visual drama in awkward spaces like an entry
  • They are useful in creating smaller, cosy zones in larger areas
  • Round rugs are playful and fun- working particularly well in kids spaces or rumpus rooms/ living rooms
  • Try a large round rug under a round dining setting for a considered look

Mirage Rugs

This beautiful range adds a special layer of interest with its global influence, intricate design and stunning colour palette. While it’s not a subtle rug, this may be just what’s required in your home. If the scheme feels it’s lacking, or too ‘safe’, the mirage will inject pattern and visual stimulation wherever it’s placed. Try adding it to a living space with a simple, plainly upholstered sofa to contrast the two pieces. Mirage rugs are available in a range of shapes, colours, patterns and sizes.

Mirage Rug Benefits:

  • The colour palettes are varied and full of life. There’s something for every interior style
  • The intricate patterns will lend themselves to traditional spaces but also modern
  • Mirage rugs are also available in round styles. Perfect for entryway drama

How to Care for Your Rug

Rugs add warmth and style to any room, but a little care goes a long way in keeping them in great shape for years to come.

  • Rotate your rug every six months to help it wear evenly, especially in high-traffic areas.
  • Vacuum regularly (about once a week) using a plain suction vacuum. Avoid rotating brush heads, which can make the rug look fuzzy.
  • Clean spills straight away. Blot, don’t rub, and use a clean white cloth. Always rinse with water to remove any sticky residue.
  • Book a professional clean three to four times a year, depending on how much use your rug gets.

Watch out for dirt and hidden grime:

  • Grit and soil can wear your rug down over time. Use door mats and vacuum frequently to protect the fibres.
  • What looks like a stain is often leftover residue that attracts dirt especially from sugary drinks or soap that hasn’t been rinsed properly.
  • Avoid scrubbing, over-wetting, or using harsh cleaners.

When in doubt, contact a professional cleaner. A little regular maintenance makes a big difference to the longevity and look of your rug!

FAQs

What should I consider when choosing a rug for my bedroom?

There are a few things to consider here. Do you want the rug to feel plush underfoot or would you prefer a flatter pile? Do you want the rug to become a feature (with pattern and colour) or more understated? Bedrooms are not incredibly high-traffic spaces so you can afford to choose something like wool or a light colour which you may not, say, in an entryway. Ensure the rug is large enough too, you can see a few different size and placement ideas in our Rug Guide.

Where is there a rug store near me?

The Flooring Xtra rug store means you can choose a rug online and have it sent directly to you! With so many options to select from and free delivery, it’s a great way to shop.

What type of rug fibre is the most durable for a busy home?

Rugs fibres are similar to that of carpets and if you’re on the lookout for a durable option, a synthetic fibre like polypropylene is a great idea. Something also to consider is an outdoor or washable rug for those really messy areas of the home!
