Feature Project: Marrickville Workers Cottage
By: Annalese, Published: June 30, 2020This busy family home in Sydney’s inner-west has recently undergone the last stages of its makeover, a worker’s cottage with a patchwork of renovations under its belt and flooring which reflects this history. Uneven surfaces, worn areas and trip hazards have caused grief for owners Toby and Renee for four years and it was time to create a seamless home renovation and safe environment throughout. With Designer James Treble (@designerjamestreble), Renee visited Eric and Charlene at Inner West Flooring Xtra to find a product that ticked all the boxes.
Hinterland hybrid in colour ‘Rustic Oak Natural’ was a perfect solution for this Marrickville property in all regards. It appealed to Renee from the moment she saw it, with its authentic timber appearance. She selected a warm colour to complement the history of the home and the furniture she already had while creating much-needed light in some of the darker areas of the home. In terms of practicalities, Hinterland timber hybrid is waterproof, allowing the same product to be installed from the front door right through to the kitchen at the back. It’s extraordinarily resilient too, able to withstand pets, kids, high traffic and easy to clean.
The big issue of the inconsistent flooring heights throughout has been a bugbear, with some areas raised when renovations have occurred. It’s enough of a height difference for guests who don’t know the home well to trip. The beauty of hybrid flooring is that it has its own underlay attached to the back of the boards, negating the need for additional underlay. The team were able to easily rectify the variations and the family couldn’t be happier with the result.
“We’re really pleased,” said Renee. “It really works well with a young family.” James Treble agrees, “this flooring solution is great for renovations. We’ve transformed this home in a really cost-effective way with a very high-performing product. You get the look of natural timber, but because it’s a hybrid product, it can be steam-mopped and wet-mopped, so it’s really hard-wearing. It’s perfect for children and pets if you have them inside!”
FAQs
What are the benefits of hybrid flooring?
There are many benefits of hybrid flooring that make it a great flooring choice. It looks fantastic, with many authentic timber-look styles available. It’s also durable, easy to clean and some products can be installed in wet areas.
How to clean hybrid flooring
Hybrid flooring, like all flooring, requires maintenance to ensure it lasts for years to come. Residual grit, sand and dirt can lead to wear on hard flooring or stains on carpet. Ensure the floors are regularly swept or vacuumed and try to encourage a “shoe-free” home to minimise the transference of the outdoors in on shoes!
