The delightful Rachael Gowling of Plan.Design.Build.Repeat knows her stuff. From New Zealand to Australia, her projects have been a labour of love and well-documented across her social media channels. Flooring Xtra has enjoyed being involved with several gorgeous builds, seeing her good-taste and common-sense perspective transform homes.
Rachel has recently set her sights on a different sort of project, one where she’s on a mission to share her knowledge and experience of the design and build process with her audience. Honest, generous with her insights and as personable as ever, her course, podcast and social media are refreshing. Recently, Catherine from Flooring Xtra chatted with her about all things flooring.
The in-depth conversation between Catherine and Rachael explores the process of selecting flooring. Notably, within the current Covid 19 landscape, they also discussed how flooring projects don’t have to necessarily stop, and how Flooring Xtra are approaching these unique times to work with clients.
Beyond the process of selecting products, Rachael was keen to learn about what flooring trends the stores were seeing. The rise in conscious consumer sentiment in terms of sustainability and wellness, was highlighted by Catherine (and her best picks for environmentally sustainable products!) and the more aesthetic trends of textured wool carpets, natural oaks and Australian species timber/ timber flooring look products.
The podcast is the perfect combination of project-specific experience and product knowledge- all in an easy to absorb and personable chat! To listen to the conversation, click here or via our podcast page here.

FAQs
Can I install carpet myself?
Flooring Xtra stores have dedicated professional installation teams who are passionate about their job! It’s advised to use professional installers to ensure the correct laying of the carpet but also any pre-installation preparation work that might be needed. Relax and let them do the hard work!
What is Triexta carpet?
A Triexta carpet is stain resistant and durable, is great for those on a budget, and is fantastic in family homes and high traffic areas. Triexta is has a similar composition to polyester and is also environmentally friendly, partly derived from corn sugar.
Are timber floors high maintenance?
Timber floors sit higher on the maintenance scale in the hard flooring world. But while laminate flooring, vinyl and hybrid flooring might require less maintenance, all flooring requires some level of care to keep it looking like new for longer. The look and feel of real timber is also aspirational, authentic and full of genuine character which can last for years if cared for. It also has the ability to be repaired in many cases, that is why we see beautiful old homes with original (restored, often) flooring.
